Birgunj is a Nepali city which is based near the border of the Indian state of Bihar. It is a major point of entry for Indian goods trade. Birgunj also receives the goods coming in from the port of Kolkata. Located in the Terai region, Birgunj is the second-largest city after Biratnagar and the sixth most populated metropolis in Nepal. As an entry point to Nepal from Patna and Kolkata, Birgunj is known as the "Gateway to Nepal”. It is also called "Commercial capital of Nepal". The town has significant economic importance for Nepal as most of the trade with India.

Birgunj is a popular stopover for people undertaking treks in Nepal such as the Annapurna Base Camp and the surrounding mountains of Nepal.

Must try: Tanga - Horse driven carts locally called Tanga have historically been the mode of transport for the Madheshi people.

Must buy: With dominant Hindu and Buddhists, some of the best souvenirs from Nepal have a religious significance and meaning. They reflect the faith and culture of the people. Such is Thangka Painting.

A Thangka is a unique painting on cotton or silk applique, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene or mandala. It is not a flat art like an oil painting or acrylic painting but consists of a picture panel which is painted or embroidered over which a textile is mounted and then covered in silk. Singing bowls, Khukuri, rice paper art are few significant souvenirs to collect.
